Weed Identification... Please Help!

This is growing here in the sunnier spots of the property.

The root system is the runner-type.  I pull this weed easily enough and the root just go through the soil, as if I were pulling a thread on a rug.

I don't know how to explain it.  It's what you see growing around this rock.  I'll pull one and take photos of the roots if that will help.

If I don't pull it and let it just grow, the top of the grass tends to get this reddish-flowering-whatever but I never leave it long enough.  It seems to me that along with the reddishness, there's also some yellow there.

If you look at the "plant" in the lower left corner of the photo, it's the best shot.

Pulling it isn't bad so I'm not looking for remedies but it's bugging me like crazy that in everything I've looked, I can't figure out what this is.

I live in southeastern Connecticut and I have seen this growing in lawns and gardens in this area.

Your help is appreciated.

  1. I really can't tell from the picture but this is a good website that might help you I can tell it is a broadleaf weed. I am interesting in knowing what it is too!

  2. I can't what it is in the photo clearly enough to identify it, but here is a link to a website I use all the time to identify weeds/wildflowers: Use the drop down list to browse photos by flower color. It may not help with identifying this plant, but I'm sure you'll use it.
